Sheryl Bradshaw, a single woman looking for a suitor on the popular 1970s TV show, chooses the attractive bachelor Rodney Alcala, unaware that behind the man’s gentle facade he hides a deadly secret. The staff at IMDb has compiled a list of notable female-directed films from 2024. Some of Sheryl’s bad experiences as an aspiring actress mirror Anna Kendrick’s. The comment about Sheryl’s breasts is “corrected verbatim from something that happened to me when I was 19″… The coins stolen from the laundromat are modern day apartments.

This movie does a good job of exposing the ways psychopaths often use charm to lure their victims. I appreciate that the film is by no means a typical horror film or a typical psychological thriller. Most of the violent acts in this film are only depicted through the events leading up to (or after) them, and so much of the actual violence is implied rather than shown. It keeps things light enough – and doesn’t show enough actual violence – to keep the film watchable, but at the same time it’s often very confusing and disturbing. The scene in the parking lot after the recording of the case game really perfectly conveyed the same feeling that the character played by Anna felt at the time.
or women’s vulnerability for their own selfish gain
It’s like I can literally feel her own fear and anxiety. I think Anna’s acting and direction in this film was excellent, as well as all acting in general. What I appreciate most about this movie is the underlying message or themes of how women can so easily fall prey to the darker side of a man’s ego and how manipulative some men can be with women, such as taking advantage of innocence. I also understand how society in general (and especially at that time) actually encourages and often condones this kind of treatment of women – dehumanizing and objectifying them. And as the film shows, even intelligent women are susceptible to the charms of a psychopath – and society alone can make them vulnerable.
But anyone hoping for something deeper will hopefully appreciate it
This message was not conveyed solely through “Rodney’s” behavior and violence. but also through the behavior of a few other male characters in the film. Anyone hoping for a typical serial killer movie will be disappointed with this one.
